Whiteheads & Blackheads

Whiteheads and blackheads usually look like little bumps on the skin. Whiteheads happen when the pore is plugged up with oil, skin cells, and bacteria. It looks like a small bump that looks white on top.

Blackheads happen when the pore is enlarged -- it's not actually plugged up. If you have this kind of acne, it's usually mild and can be treated with acne treatments you can by at the store.

Papules & Pustules

Papules usually happen when the pore becomes very irritated and the walls break. Papules look red, inflammed, and can be hard and tender to touch.

Pustules are just like papules but also have a center filled with liquid, yellow-ish pus.

Nodules & Cysts

Nodules occur when the pore become even more irritated and the inflammation happens in deeper layers of the skin. They usually look red. Also, they usually feel hard and a can be quite painful.

Cysts are like nodules but they feel softer. They usually are filled with pus.

These two kinds of pimples are usually considered severe. You should see a doctor to see how he/she can help you if you think your acne falls into this category.
