Over-the- Counter Treatments

There's a lot you can do to help your skin if you have pimples. There are acne treatments that you can find at the store with your parents. You need to be patient when using these because it can take up to 12 weeks to show improvement. Also, sometimes your skin looks or feels worse in the first couple weeks you use a new medication. But rest assured that your skin will get used to the new medications afterwards and be less irritated. In other words, stick with it!

Benzoyl Peroxide

BPO is a very common ingredient in pimple creams and washes. It works by killing the bacteria that causes pimples. Just be careful where you apply it because it can take the color out of your clothes and sometimes hair.

Salicylic Acid

This is also a very common ingredient in acne medication. It works by unplugging pores and prevent them from getting plugged up in the first place. It also can help lessen the redness and swelling pimples can sometimes cause.  Some people who use acne medication with salicylic acid can experience redness and dryness. Unlike BPO, SA will not take the color out of clothing and hair.

Sulfur

Sulfur might sound like a strange ingredient, but it's a common ingredient in some acne treatments. It is usually combined with other pimple gighting ingredients, like salicylic acid. It works by removing excell oil from the skin and also by taking away dead skin cells that can clog up your pores. Just know that sulfur can cause some skin dryness and can have an unpleasant smell.
